The Players Championship
March 28, 2005 I've been trying to play a lot of golf lately to escape working and the other craziness that life sometimes kicks our way. When our friends Patrick and Amy asked if Meegy and I wanted to come down to Jacksonville to hang out and check out the THE PLAYERS Championship at Sawgrass we couldn't resist. It was great seeing Patrick and Amy and their new digs, they made the jump from Atlanta when Patrick accepted a job with PGATour.com. Again thanx for having us out! You can't beat seeing a tournament such as the one held annually at Sawgrass, being up close to Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, to name a few was way cool. Also it put into perspective how bad my game is :) Well I have my good days and many many bad days. And the course itself was amazing, hopefully one day we'll be able to come back down to play a round or two. I should mention that it did rain a lot which was bad for the tournament but worked well around our schedule. The delays allowed us to sleep in a little and take our time grabbing lunch on Saturday. We caught a good 5 hours or so of play after a heavy morning rain and then Sunday caught play until we had to hit the road for home. Right as we drove off the storms rolled in and killed play for the rest of the day, it was like someone held the rain back just long enough for us to hang out before leaving. Sunday's play was the most memorable, I saw Sergio Garcia pitch in a shot from the rough on hole 3 and then on hole two stood right next to Vijay Singh as he hit an amazing recovery shot from the trees to the green. Dang those guys are good! Home sweet home... March 15, 2005 Ah it's great to be back home! I had a blast hanging out in New York with Meegy, but you can't beat the warmth of the south and being able to drive instead of walk everywhere. I know that sounds lazy, but dang my feet were starting to hurt. I do have a bone to pick since being back home. I wish all the chatter in the news about Brian Nichols, the guy that killed a judge and several others in a Fulton county court house, would stop. The story is known, now it's time to let the families that lost love ones find piece. You can probably tell that I don't care much for how the press misrepresents and over dramatizes stories. For example the AJC had a huge Sunday headline that read "CAPTURED", maybe I miss understood something but from what I saw on TV and what I read in the AJC article he "SURRENDERED". Using the word captured must sell more papers. I could go on for days about how bad the local paper is so I'll leave my comments at that, time to grab a coke... The south side March 12, 2005 Today is our last full day in the big Apple before heading back down south and there is still so much to see. To start we headed on down to China Town, lots of cool shops and other bits of sensory overload. I enjoyed China Town, but at the same time was a little let down. I expected it to cover a larger area then it did. Just the same it was great to see. From there we walked towards the pier area just next to the Brooklyn Bridge. The view of the bridge from the pier was way cool, plus having a quick spot to grab a drink and a seat was nice. Still not used to so much walking... After the pier stop it was on to the financial district. There we saw the expected sights, the Stock market, statue of the Bull, etc and ended up at the Battery for a squinted view of the Statue of Liberty. Sometime when it's warmer out we'll have to come back and take a Ferry out to get a closer look. Next our stroll took us past the World Trade Center site. At this point the area is pretty well cleaned up, even so there is still a strong feeling of disbelief over all that was lost that dark day in 2001. After paying respects at the trade center it's back to the Brooklyn Bridge for a quick walk across, well a quick walk half way across. At this point our feet are hurting pretty good. If you have never walked the bridge I highly recommend it! The bridge itself is really cool and the view it provides of lower Manhattan is something that can't be missed. OK enough walking, time to head back to clean up and then join up with ex Atlantan's Adam and Marsha in Brooklyn to celebrate their new pad and Adam's Birfday. You just can't beat hanging with good friends and of course sipping a little whiskey doesn't hurt either. Taking the plunge and sharing pizza March 11, 2005 What started out as a crazy busy work day turned into one of the coolest days ever. To start Meegy and I had to ship out from staying at the Roger Williams hotel and transfer uptown a little to the ultra modern Alex on 45 and 3rd. We thought it would be cool to jump around a little since we were in town for a full week. So we checked out from the Roger Williams, worked in the lobby until about noon and moved on to our next stop. Our room wasn't ready at the Alex so we quickly dropped off our bags and headed for the city. This outing took us by Donald Trump's building, some other really cool spots just south of Central Park and of course Central Park itself. While in Central Park we strolled down what's known as the Mall and found a cool little area around a pond. Snow was on the ground, the pond was iced over, and well, I asked Meegy to marry me. And I'll be darned she said yes! Schazam we're getting married, just like that. We're very happy and I was really excited about everything surrounding the moment. Setting was romantic as the girls would say and I managed to keep my cool enough to speak in clear complete sentences :) Once engaged we did what any newly engaged couple would do, we walked down to a Sabbaro for a slice of pizza and a drink. I know slow down big guy with all the romantic stuff, but hey anything for my Meegy. Once done with our pizza, and still in shock from our special moment, we made our way back to our hotel and found out our room wasn't ready so they were going to upgrade us to a suite. Dang could this day get any better! After admiring our room and our view of the Chrysler building, we cleaned up and met some old Atlanta friends for dinner. After enjoying some mighty fine sushi and conversation it was time to get a little rest. What a day... On down to the village March 10, 2005 So today Meegy was able to return to our hotel after a lunch meeting, this is most excellent because it means we can work together for a bit and then do some exploring. Today's area to venture is the East Village and part of Soho and then off to hit a swank little club called APT. Once in the Village we immediately question locals for some good food spots to hit and lucked upon a really really good cafe. I'll have to post the name later, it escapes me at the moment. From there we wandered on to a very sheik Thai Restaurant called Peep and had some pretty cool exotic drinks. Basically Cosmos and Bellini's but made with real fruit to snazz things up, very tasty. Finally we end up at APT, nice space but it was an off night for the music so we sit for a drink and call it a night. Now that's cold! March 09, 2005 Day two in Gotham is here and the plan is the same as yesterday, lots of work with an occasional escape into the city. The weather has cleared up, but boy is it cold now. The wind just cuts right through you when you walk. To start out I dropped Meegy off at Grand Central Station again and then headed down 3rd Ave. Lots more local spots in that area, which at this point was refreshing since all I've seen so far is tourist type places and land marks. For lunch I ran out again this time heading south down Broadway. During the trek I saw the Empire and Chrysler Buildings and encountered street vendors for the first time. Man you can buy anything here for cheap or overly expensive, whichever suites your fancy. Towards the end of the day recent Atlanta transplant Adam and I bar hopped a couple of places around the hotel and then Meegy made it back into town so we heading into the East Village for dinner. After dinner we accidently wondered into CBGB which was pretty cool. Overal the place is a dump as I had guessed, they did have a pretty cool photo gallery next door. Lots of old Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, etc pictures. I think that's about it for now, feet are starting to smart a little so it's time to relax. NYC day one... March 08, 2005 What a way to start the week, blowing snow, a little bit of work and lots of walking. The day started off rainy and cool and quickly turned into driving wind, snow and then the cold set in. Elements aside I took a stroll around Times Square, Grand Central Station, Broadway and other areas in between. I also had a chance to grab a bite at a really cool dinner with an old Friend Adam S. Once the night set in I grabbed a beer here and there and met Meegy at the train station. What a great city NYC is, I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store... NYC Bound March 07, 2005 Just made it up to New York for a week of working and hanging out. The flight in was amazing, the skies were clear and we flew right down the middle of Manhattan. The view of Times Square, Empire State building, etc all lit up for the night was unforgettable. Also seeing the world trade center site from the air was humbling. Tomorrow is going to be a busy work day so I'm off to bed... Here comes the snow March 01, 2005 Out of no where it snowed today in Atlanta, it was a nice distraction since we don't see snow very often. Snow aside I found this article on a new line of Segways. I might have to get one of these golf mods ! |
